Student positive behaviour

We are all responsible for our own behaviour. The choices we make have consequences and can have positive or negative impacts on ourselves and/or others.

At  St Therese's School, we aim to lead, establish and support behaviour that is responsible, in a way that acknowledges and protects mutual rights.

We have developed a Behaviour Management Plan to provide guidelines that will assist in providing clear and consistent expectations of the ways we interact with each other.

What is Positive Behavioural Intervention and Support (PBIS)?

PBIS is a research-based, school-wide systems approach to improve school climate and create safer and more effective schools.

PBIS IS a process that we started to implement in 2010. This is an ongoing process.

PBIS focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach expectations and support positive behaviour for all students so that it is across the board for all staff and students alike.

PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement, and evaluate effective school- wide, classroom, non-classroom, and student-specific discipline plans.

PBIS is a team-based process for data review, data-based problem solving and intervention, ongoing planning, and monitoring of interventions.

The steps involved in setting up school-wide PBIS after the initial training were to:

  • Identify a school team to guide and direct the process. The team was made up of an administrator, grade level representatives, student services staff, non- classroom staff and parents.
  • Establish 3-5 positively stated school-wide behavioral expectations which have been named – Respect for Self, Respect for Others and Respect for Environment.
  • Establish a way to collect office referral and other data on a regular basis to evaluate the effectiveness of school-wide PBIS efforts.

The graphic below defines the three-tiered prevention/intervention model that is integral to PBIS.

We identified the school oval, the toilets, the Church and the passive area as the non classroom settings where we wanted to start to implement PBIS. We introduced and explicitly taught the children the following positive behaviours under our school rules and displayed these expectations in the form of a matrix. These matrices are shown in the downloadable document above and are placed around the school as a visual reminder for all.
